The inside covers are handmade Nepalese Lokta paper, in a gorgeous turquoise.
The book is stitched together with Williamsburg Blue coloured Irish Linen waxed thread. This is the best kind of thread to use for bookbinding, because it doesn’t stretch, so your journal stays firmly bound, no matter how often you open and close! I know … I use my journals every day!
I used Coptic stitching to bind the book together, which means that the book will lie completely flat when opened, which makes it perfect for journaling or sketching. It’s also the best kind of binding for the left-handers out there! No spine getting in the way!
I used cyanotype spine wraps made with teabag paper for this journal, so it looks lovely when it’s standing on your shelf.
What is a journal?
It’s your story, your history, your present moment.
It’s a gateway into who you really are and how you really feel.
It’s a place to play and a place to get down to some serious work.

Hi! I’m Lizzie, the woman behind Redheadwondering Hand Bound Books, and I created this gorgeous journal because I really do believe your words are worth it!
I love to experiment with different papers when I am creating cyanotype prints. And this paper is a whole new experience for me. It's .... wait for it ... teabag paper ... which is very fine, but also strong. Tie dying paper is not usually something you’d do, because it’s usually too fragile to be manipulated this way, especially when it’s damp. But tea bag paper is actually designed to be strong when it’s wet, perfect for tie-dye cyanotype prints. I used a few splashes of gold ink for a bit of bling.
It's a great way for me to use up the little bits of thread that are left over from book binding.
It's a bit tricky to turn the prints into book covers, because although it’s strong, the paper is also very fine. So, I backed it with some lovely Indian Cotton Rag paper. The inside covers are handmade Nepalese Lokta paper in a dark turquoise.
Cyanotype printing is a wonderful form of alternative photography, where you use the sun’s UV rays to develop the print. I always use flowers as the subjects for my prints, and sometimes I add some extra ingredients … for this journal, I used Herbin Ink in a lovely purple, called Bouquet D’antan, and I added a few sprinkles of gold ink to add a bit of bling. I also used salt which gives a wonderful crystalising effect.
