Of its nature, scrolled enamel is a collaboration between artist and material. I know what I would like to produce and I choose the colours and their placement accordingly.
I then produce a steel rod, 18 inches, with a crook at the end and a sharp point. When I judge the materials should be malleable enough to manipulate I try to draw the steel tip through them to generate a pattern. The copper shape, the enamels, are red hot; I think I remember how colours were placed, I poke the steel tip into the red and begin to draw it through the material. It may resist; it may run free, the piece may stick to the tool and need to be dislodged. All the while the red heat is cooling; I must withdraw the tip from the enamel or I will lift the piece out of the kiln. It comes away with threads of enamel running from it. These will snap and fall back on the piece adding more elements to the design, if I am lucky I have the tool clear of the kiln. I quench it in cold water, closing the kiln door.

Full description

This brooch measures 30mm square. It is mounted on a 26mm brooch bar soldered to the copper shape. The pin secures with a rolling catch.

After building a base coat of clear enamel on the copper shape I have added a thin coat of blue. The copper base shines through the blue in tones of golden brown. I then scattered mauve, yellow, white and green enamel over the blue then, while the piece was in the kiln at red hot, drew a steel point through the enamels to generate the swirled random patterns.

Your brooch will be sent boxed as shown, by Royal Mail, first class, tracked.
