These chunky drop earrings have retro appeal as they are made with vintage boatite which has been bezel set in sterling silver and finished with simple silver hooks. The earrings measure 54mm drop (inc hook) by 17mm across. Boatite is a build up of cured paint from boat yards, in this case the Larson boat yard and this material is believed to be from the 1960's hence the retro colour palette of yellow and blue marbled on a cream background. These earrings have a more subtle colour palette and pattern than most of the boatite I cut, they also have a few surface dimples from where there were air holes in the rough, I had to cut the boatite thicker than normal because of these air bubbles but whilst they are heavier than I would normally make they still aren't heavy.
Boatite is the name given to the cured build up of paint that forms in boat yards (I like to think of it as fordite's maritime cousin). Normally this build up would be thrown away but occasionally lumps of it would be kept as a curio and people are now realising the beauty of this waste material and turning it into jewellery. I cut and polish this material myself so if you would prefer something else then drop me a message.
The earrings measure 54mm drop (inc hook) by 17mm across.
