Garnet is the traditional birthstone for Capricorn and the month of January.
The term Garnet actually applies to a group of minerals that are related in composition and structure, but differ in colour.
The dark red that we most associate with Garnet is known as Pyrope Garnet, like the round beads here, while the slightly lighter, more raspberry pink of the ovals and faceted beads is known as Rhodolite Garnet.
The ancient Egyptians buried their dead with necklaces and ornaments of Garnet.
The common belief that Garnets had the power to shield their wearer from harm made them popular with both royalty and warriors.
In the middle ages it was believed that a dragons eyes glowed red because they were made of Garnet.
It is thought to be a highly protective stone.
Garnet is also the stone for the second wedding anniversary.

This red and pink necklace is made from three different shaped Garnet beads along with Rose Quartz and gold vermeil detail.
The centrepiece features seven polished Garnet ovals, of approximately 8mm length, separated by 3mm AAA grade faceted Rhodolite Garnet beads highlighted with tiny 2mm gold vermeil spacers.
The necklace graduated to alternating 4mm Garnet and Rose Quartz rounds.
At either end of the row of Garnet ovals I have placed a 3mm gold vermeil stardust rondelle for a hint of sparkle.
The necklace fastens with a Tibetan-style rose toggle clasp with an antique gold finish.
The clasp is nickel and lead free.
This striking necklace measures approximately 16.5 inches (42cm).
Your necklace will be wrapped in tissue and presented in a pretty organza gift bag.
Price includes delivery within the UK.
