This brooch features a layer of green enamel over a background layer of colours, pink, yellow, blue and white. These colours and the underlying copper base, shimmer and sparkle as light reflects from the brooch.

The oval measures 28mm by 37mm. I have soldered a 26mm brooch bar to it, placed centrally along the length so the brooch may be worn in either direction, broad or narrow. The pin secures with a rotating safety catch.

This brooch is decorated with a technique, scrolling, that involves drawing a steel point through the red hot enamel to generate a pattern from the colours on the base. At this stage the piece is in the chamber of the kiln, a restricted space, at red heat, 800 degrees centigrade. I am manipulating a long rod with a crook at its end, guessing at the position of the different coloured elements of the pattern, all of which are now bright red, hoping that the enamel is sufficiently melted to allow the tool to pass through and generate something like the pattern I have in mind. As the enamel cools and tightens its grip on the tool I need to lift it clear or I will have it welded to the point. As I lift the point it may bring with it a thread of enamel, cooling, that I coax back to the surface of the piece. I get away with what the kiln allows and leave you to judge the success of our endeavour.
