"I specialise in dogs and had only sculpted one other cat before modelling the Stretching Cat sculpture. As this wasn’t a commission the pose was entirely my choice and I wanted to choose a pose that was sculptural and full of expression.
Working on a small scale is actually surprisingly difficult. Modelling the wax with tiny marks takes a high degree of precision. Yet it was also important to make broader marks, to represent the essence of the stretching cat. I had a lot of fun making this and it remains one of the most popular of my small animal sculpture range."
