"Breaking the Surface was sculpted for a vicarage in East Anglia, to stand in the water amongst reeds in a swimming pond. I have been experimenting with different uses of circles, whose shape represents a part of the ‘one world’ environmental/animal welfare messages I am exploring in my artwork. Circles are also innately beautiful. I wanted to get the sense of that incredible moment where the Kingfisher moves in a flash from the air to the water and I loved modelling the splash interrupting it, and bubbles trailing from the Diving Kingfisher’s wings."
