The ancient Egyptians prized Amazonite, and placed jewellery and carved ornaments made of Amazonite in the tombs of the dead.
It was one of the stones used to inlay the golden mask of Tutankhamun.
It is regarded as a stone of hope, balancing emotions and soothing stress.
I like the subtle understatement of larvikite, how it seems at first glance to be a mottled stone of paler and darker grey until light reveals hints of a silvery sheen and flash of blue.
It is named after the region of Larvik in Norway, and was named Norways national stone in 2008.

Striking necklace featuring 5x8mm Larvikite rondelles separated by 3mm, micro-faceted, AAA grade Amazonite.
A pair of silver stardust 4mm beads to either side add contrast of shine.
These are nickel and lead free.
The necklace then graduates from 6mm to 4mm Larvikite beads, interspersed with splashes of bright turquoise blue from the Amazonite.
The mottled grey Larvikite beads show occasional flashes of silvery-blue in the light, known as the schiller effect, and are very similar in appearance to Labradorite.
The faceted Amazonite beads have a beautiful, shimmering blue-green hue, and the micro-faceting gives them a lovely sparkle.
The necklace finishes with a Tibetan silver rose toggle clasp that is easy to fasten and is nickel and lead free.
This eye-catching necklace measures approximately 16 inches (40cm).
Your necklace will be wrapped in tissue and presented in a pretty organza gift bag.
Price includes delivery within the UK.
