I wanted to design some winter cards and I thought that the perfect animal for one of my cards was the mountain hare (Lepus timidus).
The mountain hare is Britain's only native species of hare is the mountain hare, and is thought to have been living on our island for more than 100,000 years. Mountain hares are smaller than the brown hare, and their coat changes from brown to white in the winter to help camouflage them in the snow. Today, they are only found in Scotland (where they are indigenous) and the Isle of Man and the Peak District (where they have been re-introduced).
