Turn a jar into a vase, with this set of two colourful ceramic Flower Frogs.
Taking my inspiration from history, the idea of the Flower Frog was simply a device to help arrange flowers, going right back to the mid 19th century, popular in the Twenties, Thirties and currently used in various forms, for the art of Japanese flower arranging called Kenzan.
As with my Landscape Posy Vases, they are perfect for a few flowers from the garden, leaves or seed heads, depending on the season.

This set of two colourful Flower Frogs, start off life as a circle, hand cut from a rolled slab of clay.
After leaving to dry to a leather hard state, a variety of holes can be made through the ceramic disc safely, without distorting the shape.
Eventually these holes will hold the flowers in place.
After a tidy up off all the edges, the Flower Frogs are stacked and weighted down to avoid warping while drying, before being placed into the kiln for a first firing.
Bright and colourful, smooth and shiny earthenware glazes are then applied to the hardened and porous, top surfaces of the near completed Flower Frogs, before being placed back in the kiln for the glaze firing.
The Flower Frogs are 7 cm in diameter and approx 5 mm thick, un glazed on the under side, to help grip onto the top of the jar.
