Tourmaline has been used for a long time, but has mostly been confused with other gemstones due to its wide variety of colours - green with emeralds, red with ruby etc.
It was only in the 1800's that scientists recognised Tourmaline as a distinct mineral species.
Tourmaline occurs in more colours and colour-combinations than any other group of minerals.
Green Tourmaline is associated with the Zodiac sign Leo, and the month of August as an alternative to the traditional birthstone of Peridot.
Leo is ruled by the Sun and the element Fire.
For this necklace, I have chosen three Swarovski crystals, in 'peridot', 'fire opal' and 'jonquil', to sit alongside the Tourmaline, to represent Leo's traditional birthstone, Fire and The Sun.
