Thank you for shopping with us.

When I first learned to weave with rush, I attended a workshop to make a rush hat. I have loved them ever since. They are lightweight and very comfortable to wear, strong and sturdy, stylish and very beautiful. They can be woven in many different styles, with domed or flat tops, standard or narrow brims. Trim with a beautiful scarf or leave it simply as it is. Despite their lightness, they are surprisingly hard wearing - I had a rush 'garden' hat which lasted me 8 years despite being tangled in roses and brambles, worn in all weathers and handled with muddy hands.

To measure for your hat size, simply take a tape measure round your head where a hat would sit - across the brow, behind the ears and across the back of the head.

Hats can be made to order. Please contact me for further details.

The price includes P&P - if you wish to purchase more than one item from our shop, please contact us prior to placing your order so we can recalculate the postage and packing costs.

Full description

A beautiful, traditional boater hat handwoven from Somerset rush. Very light to wear but strong and sturdy. Beautiful as a sunhat, for weddings, in the garden or for popular re-enactment events and Morris Dancers.

Hat sizes available 21”, 22”, 23” or made to order. Standard crown height approx 4” x brim width 3”.

Please contact me should you wish to commission a hat to be made to your size.

Woven from Common Club Rush which grows in low-lying areas of the country - eg Norfolk and the Somerset Levels - the latter being where I hand-harvest my own rushes alongside a team of fellow basketmakers from across the country. They are then dried in a barn in Devon and stored at my home in Cornwall, ready for weaving into beautiful items.

I love the annual tradition of gathering in the harvest - working with what the land gives and meeting up with friends and fellow basketmakers from across the country.

Rush weaving is a heritage craft utilising a locally and naturally sustainably growing material, often similar in its uses to straw but with its own ancient and rich history - rush-matting and chair-seating to name only two.

Rush is beautiful to weave with - soft and pliable in the hands and has its own delicious aroma. I love nothing better than driving back from Devon with my car packed with the sweet scent of dried rushes - excited by all the next weaving possibilities.

NOTE: The flower decoration is not included.

Thank you for visiting our shop.
