An ancient Italian mosaic featuring a border of ivy leaves was the inspiration behind this quilt; the internal patches of the giant leaf imitate the mosaic tesserae.
The two main fabrics I’ve used in the design are marbled green cottons that I dyed myself, with a plain darker green for the veins. I layered the fabrics, then cut shapes out of the top fabric to reveal the patches of lighter or darker fabric underneath; the edges are all needle-turned by hand.
The background fabric is quilted by machine in simple lines to suggest the veins of the leaf, and the leaf shape is finished with a narrow dark green binding.
Hidden casings at the top back will hold your own batten/hanging pole.
The quilt will be sent to you cushioned with reusable bubble-wrap, and packed into a cardboard box (recycled when possible). Hanging pole and fixings are not included.
Size: 3ft x 3ft (1m x 1m)
My parents lived near Naples for quite a few years, and when we went to visit them we would explore the Roman mosaics in the surrounding area. Of course there are the justifiably famous ones at Pompeii and Herculaneum, but find any piece of waste ground, scuff the soil with your foot, and as likely as not you'll find a mosaic nestling just under the surface! This particular quilt was inspired by a floor mosaic from Bologna, and was made for an exhibition at Quilts UK on the theme of Forests, Trees and Leaves.
