For sale is a true to life replica heritage collection of the 12th Century designed Lewis Chessmen. This special metallic aged effect Lewis chess set is not the same as the Lewis chess sets that are commonly sold. This chess set is larger and is a true to life copy of the original pieces that are housed in both the British & Scottish Museums.
If like me you have obsessed about the Lewis Chessmen for most of your life, this is the set for you. The feel and presence while playing with the set is a total experience in itself. This is a close as a person can get to playing with the actual Lewis Chessmen. It's amazing!
This set is a combination of some of the pieces from both the Scottish & British museums and represents and attempt to unite the pieces and make them accessible as a functional Chess set.
The pieces are taken from the laser scanned originals.
This set consists of the following individual/separate pieces 2 kings, 2 queens, 3 bishops (one bishop is used on both sides) , 4 knights, 4 rooks and two sets of pawns and is arguably the most complete replica set available today.
The original Lewis chessmen were made in the 12th century by Norwegian craftsmen and hidden by Nordic traders on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland where they lay undetected until 1831 when they were discovered by a local farmer.
The chess pieces are lovingly decorated to create a soft warm metallic aged effect in keeping with the character of the old chess set.
