Handmade Chess Sets & Celtic Folk Art From Ireland

Mourne Studios is my little corner of the internet where I sell a variety of beautifully handmade chess pieces, alongside Celtic themed folk Art, all created in my little studio in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains right here in Ireland.

After graduating University with an Honors degree in Fine Art, I became interested in creating work that was both pleasing to look at and practical. This along with my obsession with Chess led me to start making the chess pieces that are now available from my shop.

At present only works created by myself are available from my store, however as time goes on some of the other artists and makers that I work with may be offering their work for sale here also.

I first became interested in making my own chess sets around nine years ago after I'd bought a fairly expensive set online that looked to be really great in the pictures, but when it arrived was very disappointing. The finish on the pieces was terrible and the contrast on the photographs used to sell it had been altered to make the details of the pieces stand out way more than they actually did in reality.

Using that set as a template, I set about casting them and experimenting with various painted antique effects and textures until I had produced a number of sets that I was actually happy with.
Since then I have been producing sets that I feel are beautiful, ornate and worth owning.

Chess sets are something that tend to stay within families for generations, and over time and use they develop a wonderful presence made from up from memories and inspired interactions. They are special and deserve a proud place in every home, which is why it is no surprise that they are such a popular family heirloom or ornamental feature.

Coming from a fine art background I found that I could utilize everything I had learned about painting and sculpture and apply the same rationale and way of working to the production of the chess sets with striking results.

My commitment to producing work that is primarily beautiful is underpinned by a traditional art college background (It's a nice to have, not a need to have). That being said, I feel a great connection with the game of chess which drives me to produce chess pieces that I am proud to see people interact with and enjoy.

Hopefully you will find something that you like in my shop and if you have any questions about any of the items for sale, (or if you simply fancy a chat) then drop me line and I'll happily get back to you.

Thanks for taking the time to read my profile.
All the best!
