I’ve long been intrigued with the thought of Phoenicians & Cornish trading Saffron for copper & tin in ancient times. It’s speculated this was how Saffron came to Cornwall.
There’s a tradition for Saffron buns in Cornwall which were part of Tea Treats, still in the children memory of older folk I’ve chatted with.
Saffron buns (or Safran in Cornish) are still available in local bakeries - we used to have ours for the beach, I love the currants! It’s a labour intensive delicate job to collect & preserve this autumn blossoming crocus’s stigma. Saffron’s expensive. Famously its weight worth more than gold.
Might splash out & buy some from a local farm which is growing it again, & get out my baking pan…

2 saffron crocuses blossom, in amongst their leaf, spilling 2 of their 3 their deep yellow (red) wild unruly stigma towards the stoney ground through which they grow. I've titled it 'Safran' which is Cornish for Saffron.

It's very hard to convey, in a photograph, the truly beautiful physical quality of the ink & it's colour on this gorgeously soft-to-touch paper - very tactile!
The colours are Crocus violet, leaf green, deep saffron yellow (red) - The photos disguise the soft matt quality of the paper & ink
Cards will vary slightly due to the nature of hand production making each card unique & original
