I absolutely love the sculptural quality of calla lilies and have made many sketches of them over the years as they grew in my mum's garden. I often paint them in a traditional watercolour manor but using a canvas gave me the opportunity to explore the lily in a different way.It was fun to create the texture where I wanted to have the waxy folds and grooves and it helped the lilies stand out from the background. I am a big fan of this type of watery background and have used it in a number of other pieces. The pallet is very adaptable to most colour schemes.

Full description
An original watercolour painting of 3 large calla lily blooms and one furled bud. I have used gouache to create a textured background and texturing on the folds and trumpets of each lily head. I prefer watercolour for the detail, shadow and the dominant burnt sienna middles. The watery, atmospheric background is in tones of sepia, burnt sienna and Prussian blue and continues around the sides. The painting was created at my Norfolk studio, measures 70cm x 50cm x 1.5cm and is ready to hang. I have called this painting Calla Lilly II.
