Introducing Riverside Feathers a unique piece of artwork inspired by three species of birds that live alongside the UK’s rivers; the great crested grebe, the kingfisher and the grey heron.

The frame containing the artwork is 8” x 6” / 20 x 15 cm and can either be hung on the wall or displayed on a surface. There is no pane of glass included.

The 3 feathers are all hand painted with acrylic paint, the two smaller ones are inspired by the great crested grebe (right) and the grey heron (left), the larger one is inspired by the kingfisher.

Grey herons are unmistakeable: tall, with long legs, a long beak and grey, black and white feathering. They can stand with their neck stretched out, looking for food, or hunched down with their neck bent over their chest.

The great crested grebe is a delightfully elegant waterbird with ornate head plumes which led to its being hunted for its feathers, almost leading to its extermination from the UK. They dive to feed and also to escape, preferring this to flying. On land they are clumsy because their feet are placed so far back on their bodies. They have an elaborate courtship display in which they rise out of the water and shake their heads. Very young grebes often ride on their parents' backs.

Kingfishers are small unmistakable bright blue and orange birds of slow moving or still water. They fly rapidly, low over water, and hunt fish from riverside perches, occasionally hovering above the water's surface.
