This design was inspired by the semaphore signal system used for Admiralty communication between Portsmouth and London between 1822 and 1847. It was designed by Rear Admiral Sir Home Riggs Popham, based on the earlier French Chappe system, but using only 2 moving arms rather than 3. A total of 15 signalling stations were built on high ground, each with a 30ft mast with 2 arms. The position of the arms denotes a letter of the alphabet, and this was observed by telescope from the next station, and then repeated by that station to carry the signal up the line. The system was made redundant with the introduction of the electric telegraph. Here endeth the history lesson !
Please contact me if you would like your own message coded in semaphore on a ceramic item.
