I just love making things - always have, and hopefully always will.
For me, pottery started as a hobby with evening classes and pottery holidays, but in 2019 I was lucky enough to be able to start my own pottery studio, Polarstar Pottery. My aim is to make individual pieces that will make you smile.
Pottery teaches you patience - each piece goes though a number of different processes as it is being made. Every one of these stages has the potential to go wrong, but as they say the more you practice the luckier you get !
The starting point is always raw clay, which has to be wedged (kneaded like bread) to make sure it is uniform consistency and flexible. Then the making starts, either throwing on the wheel, or using traditional hand-building techniques. My favourite thing is to combine techniques, so often I will throw on the wheel and then alter the shape or carve a design into it. The trick is to do it at the right time, when the clay has the right degree of moisture for the technique you are using. After the finishing touches are complete the piece needs to dry out, and in the winter this can take days. Clay shrinks as it dries, so if it dries too quickly or unevenly it can crack. Once the clay is dry it can be fired for the first time, known as a bisque firing. At this stage the clay is very, very fragile so you have to be really careful loading it into the kiln.
When the firing is complete the piece can be glazed, and then fired again. I normally use stoneware clay and bisque fire to 1020degC and then glaze fire to 1235degC. The glaze can often make or break a design and at such high temperatures it doesn't always do what you expect - so opening the kiln is always an exciting moment with a few surprises !

Love both items which are beautifully made. The spoon rest is so useful and the fish is unique. Thanks again
