These mugs are all thrown on the potters wheel. Once I have thrown a large batch they are left to dry until they become "leather hard". I then trim them to tidy the base and refine the body shape. At this stage I add the handles and also a band of brown slip around the rim of the mug (this is a liquid clay with stains or oxides added which creates the colour). The mugs now have their first firing to change them from clay to ceramic. After this initial firing they are dipped in a shiny white glaze, I wipe away the glaze from the rim to reveal the brown slip. They are now fired again to a temperature of 1270 degrees c. This vitrifies the glaze, making the mugs water tight, strong and durable.

Although the mugs are dishwasher safe I would advise hand washing as this is kinder to your handmade mug!

As each mug is handmade the size, shape and glaze will have slight variations.
