This beautiful rich red and gold thistle patterned fabric brooch has been created using beautiful William Morris & Co fabric from Moda in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum, recreating some of William Morris's patterns into fabrics.
This pattern is called 'Persian' and was designed by John Henry Dearle, Art Director of Morris & Co.
I've selected a section featuring a cream and gold thistle-like flower which is placed on a red centre, which is surrounded by a mustard yellow background with cream and red circles.
Using this section of fabric I've created a 28mm diameter fabric covered flat backed button and a layer of calico, then glued a wooden birch plywood disc into the back of the button. I have hand painted the plywood back with a matching golden yellow metallic paint followed by a gold glitter paint, both sparkle when when moved! I then added an antique bronze brooch back that has a safety catch.
This lovely brooch measures just under 3cm in diameter and would be a great addition to your favourite jacket, autumn jumper or a bag!
This unique pendant will come to you safe and carefully packaged in a UK Made eco-friendly recycled kraft card jewellery box - perfect for gifting to that Arts & Crafts or William Morris fan (of course, you can also keep it as a treat for yourself!)
This particular 100% cotton fabric has deep red, green and mustard yellow hues and was taken from an original design from a pattern book held in the V & A archives called 'Persian', designed by John Henry Dearle in 1904. Dearle was Art Director of Morris & Co after the death of Morris in 1896 and he took inspiration from Morris' earlier work of swirling and intertwined foliage and flowers and also in Turkish and Persian art - hence this Persian inspired design from 1904.
