These vibrant cufflinks feature oval cabochons of vintage fordite from the Dodge factory which is bezel set in sterling silver and finished with easy to use sterling silver swivel backs. The fordite has an eye catching pattern of concentric circles in white, red and blue (some are sparkly). These cufflinks are slight seconds, I spotted a crack in one of the cabochons as I was polishing it but the material is too nice to not use (I've tried to point it out with a fine paint brush in a photo). It has been stabilised and the setting protects it so it won't proliferate and the cufflinks will last years.
So what's fordite? It is the name given to paint build up that forms in spray booths at car plants, with each car a new layer of paint is added getting cured after each one. The build up gets removed (often with a hammer) when its in the way and lapidarists discovered that it could be cut and polished to show off the multitude of colours. I have matched the colours in this material to Dodge paint charts from 1970 (thank you to the collectors club who put the charts on online). I cut and polish this material myself (you can see rough in one of the photos, its really boring looking in this case and not included) and have quite a stash from a range of years and factories so if you like the idea of fordite but these aren't quite right drop me a message I might be able to help.
Measures approx 19mm by 15mm by 3mm with standard sterling silver swivel backs. Comes gift boxed.
