Full description

These retro cufflinks feature oval ish cabochons of vintage fordite bezel set in sterling silver finished off with easy to use sterling silver swivel backs. The fordite is oval ish (perhaps more kidney shaped) with gently curved lines in yellow, orange, cream, black and mint green. These would make a great gift for the gent who like unusual cufflinks or loves his cars.

Not come across fordite before? It is the name given to paint build up that forms in spray booths at automotive factories, with each vehicle a new layer of paint is added getting baked hard after each one. When the build up gets thick it has to be removed and lapidarists discovered that it could be cut and polished to show off the multitude of colours. I believe this material came from the Ford plant in Dagenham (Essex) and the slightly thicker layers suggests that it has come from a transit van line where they would do fleets in the same colour. This is an older fordite from I think the 70's and my dad tells me that the colours are consistent with BT and TNT vans at the time (I'm not old enough to remember the 70's so I have to take his word for it). I cut and polish this material myself (you can see the rough in a couple of the photos, this is not included) and have quite a stash from a range of years and factories so if you like the idea of fordite but these aren't quite right drop me a message I might be able to help.

Measure 20mm by 15mm with standard sterling silver swivel backs. Comes gift boxed.
