These statement earrings feature drops of vintage fordite hanging from rings of sterling silver, they are not a true hoop earring as the hoop hangs from a safety hooks (also known as kidney wires). The fordite are a well matched pair with a finely striped pattern on a white ground, the most obvious of the stripes is yellow but there is also blue and red in there. The fordite moves freely on the hoop and the hoop moves freely in the hook so these earrings have lots of movement as well as an eye catching size (65mm drop, 32mm across).
Fordite is the name given to the build up of paint in the spray booths at car factories. The paint gets cured in between each layer so it becomes rock hard allowing it to be cut and polished for use in jewellery. I cut and polish this material myself and you can see the rough in one of the photos (not included) and from the colours I have uncovered during cutting this I have dated the material to a Dodge factory in 1970 (so perfect if you love old muscle cars). Love fordite but want something else? Drop me a message I have a bit of this rough left so should be able to make you something extra special.
Measures 65mm drop by 32mm across (bit over 2 1/2 in by 1 1/4 in) and comes in a gift box.
