Not all Bees are stripey! This is a Common Carder BumbleBee whose colour is mainly ginger. It is found in a wide variety of habitats such as meadows, waste ground, ditches, embankments, roads, woodland edges - anywhere there are flowers to feed on...It’s a very cool little worker!
The image, in this print, is extracted from a photo Mr R took in the threatened ‘Treloyhan Woods’ of St Ives, Cornwall.
Treloyhan Woods were planted over a century ago on top of Wheal Margery (a very early Cornish copper & tin mine) after the mine had stopped being worked. It’s an area steeped in local heritage and flora & fauna which inhabit forgotten mining spoils within the woods.
I love the way Bee’s head is buried deeply in the flower tenaciously collecting pollen ...& importantly... contributing to our eco-system.. regardless of the urban surroundings threatening it's habitat.
This print is a tribute to a diminishing wildlife corridor & the fragile plight of the Bee.

This little Ginger Carder Bee perches skilfully on a wild balsam blossom with its head buried determinedly collecting pollen. I've coloured the flower with a blend of golden yellow to pale yellow giving it depth. I achieve this during hand inking the flower lino block. The bee is also hand inked, in a seville black. I've hand printed this 3 times, on my old Albion Press, to achieve the final image on artist paper which I then fold to form a card.
Info on the back hand-set in old letterpress, hand inked & printed on my ancient Press.

It's very hard to convey, in a photograph, the truly beautiful physical quality of the ink & it's colour on this gorgeously soft-to-touch paper - very tactile!
