Full description
These geometric drop earrings feature unusual semi circular drops of stripy fordite in a sterling silver mount. The fordite is about 2/3 of a disc with silver wire describing the remaining arc of the circle, the wire passes through the loop on the safety hook so the discs can move freely but the weight distribution means they return back to sitting with the stripes running horizontally. The stripes in the fordite are white with a bold stripe of yellow and subtler stripes in red and blue, they are a nearly matched pair.
Not heard of fordite? Its layer upon layer of cured car paint that built up on rails in the old spray booths, it would pass through the baking ovens in between each coat of paint making it hard and durable, when it was thick enough to get in the way it would be removed and some of this build up left the factories to end up in the hands of lapidarists and jewellers. You can see the rough material in the second photo (not include in the sale), I cut and polish this material myself and have dated this batch to either 1970 or 1971 from the Dodge factory as it contains 'hi-impact paint colors' (specifically butterscotch and plum crazy). I've got quite a collection of fordite so if you like the design but would prefer a different colour or like the colour but want a different design drop me a message.
Measure 38mm top to bottom and 24mm across, fordite is lightweight making these comfy to wear all day. Comes gift boxed.
