Full description
These are stunning earrings with a stand out oval drop of Dodge fordite which is bezel set in sterling silver and hangs beneath a smaller sterling silver oval hiding the post and scroll fitting. The fordite has been cut as a mirror matched pair so the curving lines almost run from one earring to the other to form a perfect circle. The fordite has a white base with bands of eye catching yellow, deep red, maroon and blue. These earrings measure 1 1/2 in top to bottom and 3/4 in across so quite large but fordite is lightweight meaning that they are not heavy or dragging on the ear lobes.
Never heard of fordite before? Its many layers of cured car paint that built up on the rails that were used in the old spray booths so that the painted car panels could be slid into the curing ovens. I cut and polish this material myself and other items cut from the same rough as these earrings (you can see them in the last photo but none of this is included in the sale) revealed that the bright yellow layer is one of the 'hi impact' paint colours that Dodge produced in the late 60's/ early 70's and has allowed me to date this material to either 1970 or 71. Changes have been made to how cars are painted so little fordite is now formed and it is becoming increasingly difficult to source especially vintage material like this. Want something smaller or to match - drop me a message and I'll see if I have any of the rough left.
