This sparkly pendant features a free form cabochon of fordite which is bezel set in sterling silver. The fordite has an eye catching arrow of sparkly silver across the middle surrounded with swirling patters in white, navy, red and black. The top is smooth with a glossy polish but has undulations in it - these are due to the shape of the rough material that I cut it from and give it character.
Never heard of fordite? Well its a build up of car paint that happened in the old manual spray booths as each car was painted a new layer of paint would land on the rails, with repeated curings this became hard and had to be removed. Most was thrown away but some ended up in the hands of lapidarists who polish through the layers to show the different colours. The silver swoosh across the middle of this piece was the outside layer on the rough so the last coat of paint before it was removed. I believe this material came from one of the car plants around Detroit in the late 90's early 2000's based on the colours. Changes to the way cars are painted mean that this material is no longer formed so if you are a car lover I'd snap some up whilst you can, also makes a great gift for anyone who likes the unusual things in life.
Measures 25mm by 23mm excluding the bail and comes in a gift box. It has a generous bail and you could easily pop it on a leather thong or cotton cord.
