This free form pendant features a cabochon of super rare vintage fordite from the Vauxhall factory in Ellesmere Port, UK, which has been bezel set in sterling silver. The cabochon is a free form triangular shape and is polished on both sides, the setting is open backed so that it can be worn either way round. The 'front' has a swirly pattern of red, green, blue, gold and white bands some of which are sparkly, the back is more stripy in white, red blue and silver, the colour palette is very vintage and more muted than the more recent US fordites. There is a small flake in the paint at one corner, this is stable and it won't flake any further.
What is fordite? It is layer upon layer of cured car paint that built up in old spray booths at car plants - in this case Vauxhall's plant on the Wirral. The colours are consistent with Vauxhall cars (Vivas and Victors) in the early 70's (flamenco red, sun glow, crystal green, blue fire and gold starfire according to the colour chart I found online) so this would make a great gift for someone who had a Vauxhall back in the day. Fordite of this age and location is rare, I polish a lot of my fordite and you can see a piece of rough with the pendant in the second photo - this is not included in the sale.
Measures approx 30mm by 35mm excluding the generous bail and comes with a sterling silver chain (you could easily put it onto a leather thong if you wanted to). Comes gift boxed.
Vauxhall are in no way associated with this product.
