This piece experiments with texture and shine, both metallic shine within the crystalline hematite, mirror reflections on the smooth surface of the silver and the added sparkle of the punched detail.

Elegant and dramatic, semi-precious hematite is a beautiful gemstone to work with. It has a deep blue-grey metallic hue, which it owes to the iron in it's crystalline structure. This colour is a magnificent foil to shiny white 925 sterling silver and the two together demand to be taken seriously. The large bead caps were cut by myself, using a piercing saw in irregular 4 pointed star shapes, drilled and punched to produce a naturalistic pattern and enfolded around the beads. The earrings hang from my own design of sterling silver hand forged fish hook ear wires and head pins and measure 38 mm in length. This particular design is intended to be reminiscent of the patterns found on the skins of deep sea creatures, such as octopi, squid and starfish and produces a sparkling counterpart to the deep grey blue of the hematite beads. They're a little bit Rock'n'Roll too! The final pic shows them next to a vintage lipstick case measuring 80 mm or 3" long for scale.
My Hematite earrings are carefully packaged in their own gift box, tied with a satin bow.
