Full description

This eye catching pendant features a large bright tear drop of fordite bezel set in sterling silver, the setting is open backed so the pendant can be worn either way round. The 'front' has an attention grabbing stripe of bright yellow, red and mustard down the middle with subtler stripes of white, emerald, purple and black whilst the 'back' has blue, white, red, green and yellow. Some of the stripes are metallic and sparkle in the sunshine. Fordite is lightweight so even though this pendant is large it is not heavy and could comfortably be worn all day.

So what is fordite? Its is layers of paint that built up on the surrounds of paint booths at car factories, as each car was painted a new colour would be added leading to the wacky palette. The material was repeatedly passed through the curing ovens and eventually had to be removed - some of this then left the factories and ended up in the hands of jewellers who cut and polished it to show the wonderful patterns and colours. Yellow and purple are unusual colours to find in fordite so I have compared this material with old colour charts and I'm fairly certain that it came from a Chrysler (Dodge) production line in 1970/71 (they are in no way associated with my jewellery though). I cut this material myself and you can see some of the rough in the final photo.

Measures 55 by 30mm excluding bail and comes with a silver chain in a gift box (you could easily put it on a leather cord).
