What’s the surprise?
The surprise is that such a spectacular display of colour can come from such a plain-looking light-emitting diode. When switched on, the l.e.d. gradually changes colour over about 30 seconds and then the sequence repeats. Placing a cut-glass tea light holder or tumbler over the l.e.d. enhances the display.

When this circuit was tested, a set of Duracell Plus Power batteries was still producing a good light output after 140 hours of continuous use.
The circuit is made on track board (approx. 6 cm x 2 cm) and requires 3 x AA batteries (not supplied). Soldering is ESSENTIAL for this kit. Please see Kit 1 for an alternative version of this circuit constructed on foam board.
These tools are needed to make this kit (not supplied):
small pliers for bending component leads,
small wire cutters for cutting component leads,
small, low power soldering iron, e.g. 15 watt, 18 watt or 25 watt.
