Full description

This necklace features a stunning elongated drop of translucent deep olive green pounamu set in sterling silver, it hangs from a triple strand of black leather cord finished with a sterling silver toggle clasp. It has a generous bail so could be taken off the leather and put onto a neckwire or ribbon to change the look of the piece. I have done spot solders to hold the setting to the wire frame work to make it look stitched together in a nod to the tribal origins of the pounamu.

Pounamu translates from Maori to 'greenstone' and covers several different types of jade and a type of bowenite. This particular stone is the bowenite variety and was cut for me from some cobbles I was kindly given by a Maori. He had collected the cobbles from the beach at Anita's Bay in Fiordland on the South Island (I had seen Anita's Bay from a kayak but as a non maori I wasn't allowed on it). The remnants of the cobble it was cut from can be seen propping up the pendant in the second shot (Alex my UK based lapidarist hated cutting this material as it splintered). The maoris believe that you don't find pounamu it finds you and it is regularly given as gifts and passed down the generations.

The leather cord measures approx 20 inches - if you would prefer a different length please drop me a message. The pendant measures just over 2 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom and 3/4 inch at its widest. The stone is just under 1 1/2 inches top to bottom and 5/8 inch across.

Comes gift boxed.
