Raku is a pottery technique that has its origins in 16th Century Japan. It involves removing ware from the kiln while the glaze is still molten, putting it into a reduction chamber and covering with sawdust. This method creates the characteristic 'crackle' glaze.

The chance nature of this process means that every raku piece is completely unique with its own personality. Translated from the Japanese, raku means 'enjoyment'.

Full description

A beautiful small raku bowl. This OOAK decorative bowl is hand-thrown from stoneware clay and glazed using a white crackle glaze on one side of the pot. The other side features an 'antique' green crackle glaze.

The black stripe between the glazes is where the pot was left unglazed. Here the natural bare clay itself has been smoked black by the firing process.

This bowl features my own pottery seal near the base.

The crackle glazes in raku pots means they are porous and decorative only. It also means each pot is totally unique. Please note that 'cracks' in the body of the pot itself are also a normal feature of raku and are considered a part of the accidental beauty of the firing technique.

Measurements:

Across 7.5cm (2.95 inches)

High 4cm (1.57 inches)

This is a listing for one small raku bowl only.
