I was lucky enough to go to New Zealand and got talking to a local lapidarist (stone cutter) whilst I was there and he recommend a particular beach for interesting finds, I won't say which beach so that he doesn't have more competion for the good rocks! I was looking for kyanite in calcite (blue crystals in a white ground) but did find this instead - I thought it would look good polished up and it does. Alex my UK based lapidarist was a little reluctant to cut up my cobble but is very pleased with the result, he is now worried about what else i might bring back from my travels.

Full description

The cabochon in this unique pendant was hand cut for me from a cobble I picked up on the beach in New Zealand, the white granite has black lines swirling through it and browny red garnet crystals have grown within it. I have hand made a sterling silver open backed setting for the stone to sit in and it is topped with an articulated bail which has been textured with a hammer. I have never seen anything quite like this material and when I have used the half dozen cabochons my lapidarist cut I doubt I will be able to get any more. (Update - a geologist has identified this as 'garnet gneiss', still don't think I'll be able to get any more without heading back to New Zealand)

Measures approx 2 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom and about 3/4 inches across the widest point. It comes complete with a 16 inch box chain but could easily be popped onto a different one.

Garnet is the birthstone for January and this would make an unusual present.

Comes wrapped in tissue paper in a gift box.
