This characterful little vase was thrown on the wheel and the patterns on the side made quickly with a shaping tool while the clay was still wet. It has been fired to over 1270 degrees Centigrade in a gas kiln. On the outside is a recently developed shino-type glaze, and this was the very first test. I was delighted with how it came out, with very deep, satin browns at the bottom and lighter hues where it has been coated with raw wood ash. Some of the wood ash has remained quite crusty, while elsewhere it has melted fully into rivulets of glassy greys, browns and greens, creating some wonderful surface effects. It's actually possible to see the stages though which the wood ash melts into a shiny glaze, fusing with the shino beneath.
The vase is just under 3.5 ins tall and approx 2.5 ins across the base. The inside has a contrasting, lighter shino which shows off the throwing rings rather nicely. Fully waterproof and can be used to display flowers. Mark Smalley's personal symbol has been impressed to the base.
Postage and packing for this piece is at a fixed cost of £3.00 within the UK.
