The latest piece in my neighbourhood collection, ‘Finnieston’ celebrates the classic architecture, beloved venues, and vibrant atmosphere of this West End community. Once a run-down post-industrial district, the area has undergone a dramatic transformation to become one of the country’s most dynamic and fashionable neighbourhoods, with Argyle Street at the heart of a thriving independent food and drink scene. Faded ghost signs hint at the former lives of cafés and businesses along the strip, while stylish new restaurants sit comfortably alongside traditional pubs that have been cherished for generations. Amid the energy and constant buzz, it’s easy to overlook that Finnieston remains, above all, a residential community — home to some of Glasgow’s finest architecture, including the sweeping curve of St Vincent Crescent, designed by Alexander Kirkland in 1849. Looming over the skyline is the mighty Finnieston crane, a reminder of Glasgows industrial heritage and now an icon of the city.
