Welcome to my birding world of fibre-sculpted artful birds, where no detail is too small or feather too tiny for me to notice and recreate.

House Sparrows evolved and spread across the globe in the wake of our human ancestors, so are perhaps the closest bird-companions we have as a species on earth. We have shared our fields and homes with them for thousands of years, and yet our relationship has not always been a kind one. From the Middle Ages until the 1950s it was everyday practice to pay children and adults in so-called Sparrow Clubs for every dead sparrow they could bring to the church. Millions and millions of House Sparrows were killed over the years, with some at least being eaten by the poor in pies. So the golden pennies you see with my sparrows, represent the money given for their deaths and perhaps the legacy of some slight negative feelings that can be found about sparrows in general even now. They are actually Red Listed birds in the UK, meaning that in recent years their breeding population has declined so significantly that they are seen as extremely vulnerable.

Passer Domesticus, a tiny bird that has shared our homes since we began to build them, the humble House Sparrow makes a perfect little gift to brighten any room.
Your female House Sparrow hanging bird decoration is handmade in wool and has her pretty shades-of-grey-and-brown plumage, recreated using the needle felting technique. Needle felting the wool allows me to blend her colours and sculpt her sweetly curved cheek, tiny beak and rounded belly too. With a backing of leaf green felt and a loop of delicate gold ribbon, you can securely hang her flying free from tree branch, houseplant or from a tiny hook flat against your wall. Finished with a tiny black resin eye which twinkles when catching the light, as do the very delicate foil Victorian Penny impressions which flutter about her in the slightest breeze. I am sure you will find her the loveliest of houseguests.
She measures12cms in length, is 5cms high without her ribbon and 12cms with, and her profile is 2cms in depth. Light as feather, like all birds, her impact on the world may be light but her beauty will last for years to come.
