I focused on painting the gradients of light and shadow as they change across each book, thinking of the shapes rather than what I am painting. I started by lightly tempering the wood panel with thinned sienna, then painted the light and shadow shapes keeping my palette to a limited set of green and whites.

Full description
I painted these from life, some of my art books on the studio window ledge. The books include some of my biggest influences: Egon Schiele, Edward Hopper and Saul Leiter. I focused here on painting the gradients of light and shadow as they change across each book, thinking of the shapes rather than what I am painting.
