Full description
A unique, hand turned pen featuring stunning Thuya Burr wood, designed for everyday elegance and reliable performance. Handmade in the shop owners own workshop with the knurled fittings giving an industrial, rugged look.
Uniquely Beautiful Wood: Each piece of thuya burl has its own pattern of swirling "eyes" and rich colour, ensuring your pen is one-of-a-kind.
Thuya burr is a highly figured burl, nearly always sourced from the root burl of the tree. The figure features mesmerising, interlocked, and irregular grain with distinctive, perfectly round clusters of small knots called "eyes," similar to bird's-eye maple but generally darker and more pronounced.
The colour ranges from lustrous golden brown to orangish/reddish brown, with darker streaks that can be nearly black. The color tends to darken as the wood ages. Thuya burr wood has a very distinct, pleasant, and highly aromatic smell. It has a pronounced cedar-like scent with hints of pine and spice, often described as smelling like an old pencil sharpener when cut or sanded.
It is difficult to work with as it is brittle and prone to tear-out and cracking when worked with tools due to the highly figured, swirled, and irregular grain structure. It is not recommended for novice woodworkers.
A unique and genuinely hand turned wooden ballpoint pen made by the shop owner in his own workshop and a felt protective pouch is included in the price.
