Hanging a stocking up on Christmas Eve is a tradition that goes back centuries and is linked to St. Nicholas who, according to legend, hid bags of gold in the stockings of young women who had no dowries. These days the bags of gold might have been replaced with chocolate coins, but the tradition of Christmas Stockings is showing no signs of dying out!
My crocheted Christmas Stockings are made from chunky acrylic yarn which is soft, yet durable. With the right care, these stockings will last for years to come, making them a sustainable choice.
By alternating treble crochet stitches with front post treble crochets, a diamond pattern has been created, which provides texture as well as being visually interesting (see picture no. 6). My stockings are decorated with a fluffy pompom, and the hanging loop has been made with a lucet fork which creates a strong but stretchy 4 sided cord. These stockings can take a lot of presents!
