I saw holes being drilled in to a steel plate to form part of a steam engine boiler. The holes had to be positioned fairly accurately and with the process of drilling formed an interesting geometric pattern and that was it. I realised I could use a line of holes to represent the number of the hour, that the increasing number of holes would add a degree of visual interest. The visual impact would be even better once it goes rusty and hey presto a unique clock design.

Full description

This stunning looking clock seems to have been made from a 390mm diameter piece of steel that has been rusting and growing old gracefully. It's actual machined from a quality MDF that is then primed and painted with special paints containing fine iron particles and then treated to generate the rust patina. The hour markers are holes through the clock face.

The rusting process means that no two clocks will ever look the same - the rusting will continue to develop with time.

All that is needed is to pop an AA battery in to the non ticking quartz movement and off it goes. It will hang on the wall via a hook in the clock mechanism.

Since these are made to order I'm unable to accept returns and since the rusting is a gradual process the lead time is around 2 weeks.
