My first ever gear box clock was a commission with a brief as simple as "a clock based on cogs, that looks like it was from machinery and could move". After I found some images of planetary gearboxes the design process was reasonably straight forward with machining on my trusty Workbee relatively trouble free.
These clocks are based on a revised and improved design of that first clock.
As with all these rust inspired projects the real fun is applying the rusting solutions and watching the primed MDF turn to rust. I’d like to be able to say that it happens before your eyes but in reality it takes several days of treating and waiting.

Full description
This amazing gear inspired clock is just under 400mm in diameter and around 35mm thick and comprised a central gear housing the quartz clock mechanism, this is surrounded by three smaller cogs and a larger outer ring cog. These are all free to move by hand so you can adjust the look of the clock. (I make a 600mm version so please message me if interested)
Although the clock has the appearance of rusting old cast iron it is in fact made from quality MDF that has been treated to look and feel like rust. The paints used have small ferrous particles that rust once the paint is treated with various activator solutions.
All that is needed is an AA battery and off it goes.
