This drawing was created from direct observation of nesting seabirds on Inner Farne, which I used to visit frequently with my grandfather many years ago. My memories of this place remain strong, and I have tried to capture them in my drawing - the oily sheen of the feathers; the curious black border on the wing and mantle feathers which always look to me as though they have been outlined in pen; the high and bright summer sun reducing the birds' pupils to pinpricks, casting dark shadows between the feathers and making them glisten and shine.
Looking at this drawing, I am transported back in time, able to hear the calls of the other birds in the colony, the waves crashing against the cliffs, and feel the sea breeze on my face. I hope you are able to feel some of this connection with nature when looking at my birds.
