Lady Godiva was an 11th century noblewoman who was married to Leofric, the Lord of Coventry. She was horrified with the crippling taxes that he was levying on his people and begged him to reconsider. He jokingly told her that he would only lower their taxes if she rode naked through the streets. The story goes that this is what she did, but ordered that everyone should shut their doors and shutter their windows to preserve her dignity. Everyone did this apart for one man called Tom. Legend has it that this is where the phrase ‘Peeping Tom,’ comes from.
