Wassailing an apple tree is a joyous and magical thing to do! To cherish and celebrate a tree and wish it well for the year ahead seems like the kind of thinking that’s needed for all trees nowadays.

Groups will come together to wish the tree or orchard a good harvest in the coming year. It’s traditional to:

Drink hot mulled cider from the communal Wassail bowl

Sing Wassailing songs

Play music, with Morris dancing

Lift a child up to impale a piece of toast on the tree branches

Bang pots and pans / drums etc to frighten away bad spirits

Pour a libation at the roots of the tree

Shoot shotguns into the tree branches (not recommended!)

Celebrate and generally have a raucous time

Shout “Wassail!”, deriving from “Waes hael” in Anglo Saxon, meaning “be of good health”.

Wassail Lino Print – Wassail to thee, brave apple tree!

Wassailing is an ancient ritual rooted in pagan practices, originally taking place on twelfth night, although Wassail events can pop up at any time during January and even in to February or March these days.

Wassail print in black and gold, printed from a hand-carved linocut design on A5 calligraphy paper. Incorporates a hand-written verse, perfect to read out for anyone having their own mini-Wassail in the back garden!

Wassail to thee, brave apple tree

Through winter frosts the stronger be

That sun’s return may find you here

And bless with fruit another year!
