I grew up around sewing. My grandmother and my mother would drag me around fabric shops where I would run my fingers along the rolls of material and listen to them droning on about the merits of each one and its suitability for particular garments, smelling the stuffy air and longing for the cake that would follow. I loved watching the long wooden ruler that would be used to measure out the fabrics. My mother sewed a lot of my clothes when I was a kid. I watched her work on her noisy Pfaff, subliminally learning the craft without ever putting this skill to the test myself. This image is a surreal, darkly humorous take on the stilted models depicted in vintage sewing catalogues. I transformed the prim and proper lady into a horrific ghost, carrying her own head. Somehow, the effect is muted and the figure is not menacing. I'd sit and have cake with her, would you?
