Witch bottles originate from the 17th century. They were buried beneath hearths in private houses as protective devices to ward off curses and evil spirits.
The bottle was filled with the occupants urine, wine, pins and needles or iron nails. The theory was the evil spirits would be attracted into the bottle where they would become inebriated by the wine and impaled on the pins or nails, trapping them in the container.
My bottles are my modern take on the custom with a date stamp. Please note they do not come pre filled!
