After I had sculpted a life sized buzzard I spent some time when exhibiting in Henley On Thames watching buzzards and the newly reintroduced Red Kites soaring on the same thermals together and nesting in the same trees. I wanted to celebrate the huge success of this reintroduction scheme, but also show a bit of the competition between the buzzards and the red kites as they will both scavenge the same food if they can. Although both birds are roughly the same sizes as each other, the Red Kites feet are half the size of a buzzards, and so shows the Red Kites reliance on scavenging, as they don't have the 'equipment' to hunt prey much larger than a mouse. Working life sized helps me to use these sculptures in a way like 'ambassador birds', where I can display them, and dispel myths that have grown around them, at the same time.

Full description
A life sized and life like female Red Kite, in patinated foundry bronze, designed to have a glowering match with my life sized female Buzzard, as they compete for food and nesting spaces. Her dimensions are: 49 H x 23cm W x 35cm D and a limited number of 12 now just over half way through the edition. Sculpted in my characteristic streamlined but life like contemporary Art Deco styling, this sculpture is good to display both indoors and outdoors. Underneath she has a threaded metal plate covered in felt, which is soft against wooden surfaces, but which can also be cemented in place using long bolts.
The colouring is life like and the crest of the Red Kite is half raised, but she is smooth to the touch and is designed to be stroked. This is my last piece at this price and future editions will be £10,000.
This will make an exceptional present for someone who loves wildlife and wild birds in particular. Or for someone who has been enjoying the reintroduction of Red Kites to the south of England, as this sculpture was made to celebrate this success story. This would make a beautiful addition to a home filled with early 20th century and Art Deco design. This sculpture has been exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London at the Society of Women Artists exhibition, at the South West Academy in Exeter, won the gold citation at the Wildlife Art Society International at Nature In Art in 2014, and has been exhibited at the Oxford University Natural History Museum.
